Self-Care Tips to Get Through the Holiday Season

Fall may be one of the busiest seasons of the year. Kids are back in school, after school activities are ramping up, holiday travel and planning is nonstop, and work is busier than ever. As a mother, self-care often gets pushed to the side during the midst of the fall craziness.

Learning to make self-care a priority is not easy, and it is something that I have had to work on over the years to help me feel more energized and in control. Here are some of my personal self-care tips to help you conquer the busy season: 


Sleep, sleep, sleep 

Over time there’s been a mindset shift towards the belief that those who can function on minimal sleep are more driven, and even, more successful. In contrast to the badge of honor that may come with sleep deprivation, studies show that a full eight hours of rest helps you be more productive, energized and contributes to healthier eating throughout the day.

At home, I make it a priority for my family to get a full night’s rest. When my daughter fights bedtime, like kids all too often do, I remind her that sleep is the time when your brain rests and your body grows. Now, she comes rushing down the stairs every morning to get measured just to see how much her body grew over night!


Relax and recharge

Whether you are an introvert, extrovert or somewhere in between, we all have our unique ways of reenergizing ourselves and it is important to know what works best for you.

Active meditation has been a game changer for me. If I sit in a quiet room alone, it brings me more anxiety because my head will swirl with a laundry list of items I need to complete. To combat this, I move these thoughts from my head and write them down on paper. Organizing my responsibilities is key to managing my stress so I can tackle my to-do list one item at a time.


Exercise in intervals

There are few days in the fall where I can block out a big chunk of time to go to the gym or favorite workout class, which is why I have learned to get creative with my exercises. The goal is to get at least 30 minutes of exercise 5-6 days per week. I know this can seem like a heavy lift, but breaking up exercise into short intervals throughout the day makes it more manageable and ensures your body is constantly moving.


Ask for help

The notion of relying on outside resources or other people for help is not easy for me, but as I continue to grow as a parent, I have learned that there is nothing wrong with asking for help.

During the holidays, I use to be so wrapped up in meeting the high expectations I placed on myself and making every moment perfect that I began to miss out on what’s important – spending quality time with family. If you are stressed about cooking the ‘perfect’ Thanksgiving dinner, welcome family members into the kitchen and engage them however you can. I have found that these are the moments where the best memories and laughs are created.
